How Do You Take Care of Eyelashes After Extensions?

Once you’ve walked out of a lash salon with those beautiful eyelash extensions, proper aftercare becomes the secret to keeping them looking fresh, full, and flawless for longer. By brushing them daily, avoiding oil-based cleansers, and adopting a few simple habits, you can maintain lash health and extend their wear.

1. Brush your Lashes Daily

As the lashes settle overnight, they may twist or clump slightly, which is why brushing them should be the first step of your aftercare routine.  A light morning brush helps realign them and maintain their fluffy shape. Using a clean spoolie, gently comb the extensions downward. This direction matters because brushing upward can tug at the roots, increasing the risk of breakage or premature shedding.

2. Steer Clear of Oil-Based Cleansers

Oil-based formulas, including balms, creamy cleansers, and dual-phase makeup removers, break down the adhesive that holds extensions in place. As a result, the bond weakens, causing early fall-out even if your application was perfect.

To avoid this, switch to water-based or gel cleansers that remove makeup effectively without loosening the adhesive. Pair them with lint-free wipes to lift away residue without snagging on the extensions.

3. Don’t Sleep on your Stomach or Side

When you lie on your stomach or side, your eyes often press against the pillow, causing friction that can bend, twist, or pull out eyelash extensions. Over time, this nightly pressure can cause uneven gaps.

Sleeping on your back reduces that contact, allowing the lashes to maintain their shape and adhesive strength. For an extra layer of protection, consider a silk pillowcase. Its smooth surface minimises friction, reduces skin creasing, and keeps the lashes from catching on rough fabrics.

4. Say No to Waterproof Mascara

Waterproof mascara may seem like a quick fix for small gaps, but they are difficult to remove. Plus, the rubbing and strong makeup removers needed to take it off place unnecessary strain on both the extensions and your natural lashes.

Even worse, the mascara can clump around the extensions, weighing them down and causing premature shedding. Since extensions are designed to offer dramatic lift and volume on their own, skipping mascara completely can make it easy for you to take care of your lashes.

5. Don’t Use Eyelash Curlers

Eyelash curlers may snap, crimp, or distort the shape of the extensions, and in some cases, they can even damage your natural lashes. Since eyelash extensions are already designed with a curl that suits your eye shape, there’s usually no need for added lift.

However, if you prefer a more pronounced curl, a heated eyelash curler is a much safer choice. It uses light warmth to shape the lashes without force, preserving the integrity of the extensions and your natural lash line.

6. Use Eyelash Sealants

Eyelash sealants can be a great addition to your aftercare routine because they reinforce the adhesive bond while nourishing the lashes. When applied every few days to the extensions, they create a protective barrier against humidity, oils, and everyday wear. By strengthening the extensions and boosting their durability, sealants help prolong the time between refills.

7. Clean with a Hypoallergenic Lash Foam

Throughout the day, natural oils, dead skin cells, and environmental debris can accumulate at the base of the extensions. If left unwashed, this buildup may lead to irritation or affect retention. This makes adding a hypoallergenic lash foam to your aftercare routine essential.

Unlike regular face washes, which often contain oils or harsh surfactants, lash-safe foam cleansers maintain the bond and prevent residue from forming. With a soft brush or fingertips, cleanse the lash line in small, circular motions, then rinse thoroughly.

8. Avoid Heat, Steam, and Sweat

Extreme heat or prolonged exposure to steam can weaken the lash adhesive, especially within the first few hours after your appointment. Although modern glues cure faster and can handle brief exposure to sweat, it’s still wise to avoid hot yoga, steam rooms, saunas, and heavy workouts for at least 6 hours after application.

9. Don’t Rub Your Lashes

Rubbing or tugging your eyelash extensions disturbs the adhesive, causes twisting, and can even pull out natural lashes. Instead, use gentle alternatives to soothe discomfort.

Instead, use a damp cotton swab to tap the area without disturbing the extensions. You can also press a cool compress over closed eyes to help calm any irritation and take care of your lashes at the same time.

10. Schedule Regular Touch-Ups

Regular touch-ups are essential to take care of your eyelashes after getting extensions. Thus, scheduling them every 3 weeks keeps your lashes looking full and fresh while preventing uneven gaps caused by natural shedding.
